The Dangers Of Too Much Fluoride

July 9th, 2009 by Lee Jacobs Discuss this article »

Believe it or not, fluoride is bad for you even though your dentist wants to give you and your children a fluoride treatment every time you go in for a checkup. It is not that your dentist is intentionally trying to harm you but rather that your dentist does not have the proper information on the effects of too much fluoride in a person.

There once was a case of a child dying in the dentist’s chair due to a fluoride treatment. Since many people already receive enough fluoride from their water, toothpaste, and from other sources, it is important to limit any additional fluoride from being introduced into your body or the body of those you love and care for.

While many people have been lead to believe that a lot of fluoride is good for their teeth, studies have shown that areas with a higher amount of fluoride in the water have more cases of teeth decay. Too much of anything never leads to something good. This is something that you have to be careful about.

Although it would be nice to simply say that you can completely stop ingesting fluoride, that is something that is often times easier said than done. This is because fluoride is everywhere. It is in anesthetics, Teflon, public water, oral dental products, tea, air pollution, and many other places. Fluoride is something that would be rather hard to completely avoid. The amount that you take in can be controlled somewhat though.

By taking steps to reduce your chance of an overdose you are doing the most you can. Try to avoid things that you know to have fluoride in it. You will still end up with some in your system no matter what but it will not be an amount that would result in an overdose.

Start by using toothpastes that do not have fluoride in them. Also make sure that you are taking in enough vitamin B6 and vitamin C supplements. Try to stay away from non-stick pans that use Teflon as Teflon is made from fluoride. Ingesting bits of Teflon from scrapes on pans can affect your health.

Also make sure that you are eating more red meats, eggs, and drinking milk as these foods are low in fluoride. Pineapple, coconut, lemon, banana, and watermelon are fruits that contain low amounts of fluoride as well. Avoid as many starches and sugars as well and maintain good oral health.

While it is basically impossible to stay away from fluoride all together you can take steps to make sure that you and your loved ones are not getting too much of it in your system. Do not let the fear of fluoride run your entire life but make sure that you are aware of the problems that can come from ingesting too much of it. That knowledge alone will help you take the right steps in order to make sure that you are not facing a possible over dose.
