A lot of times, this higher level of glucose comes from the pancreas’ ability to produce insulin at a sufficient level, or your body having an unhealthy resistance to insulin, leaving your blood sugar levels very unstable. In either case, it is important to maintain positive control over the level of blood sugar to prevent some major health problems, including the possibility of entering a diabetic coma. Beliefs on what constitutes the proper diet for diabetics vary widely.

For years, the prevailing wisdom was that diabetics should strictly avoid foods high in sugar and other carbohydrates. The reason for this is because sugar is easily broken down into glucose, and as a result it enters the bloodstream faster than other carbohydrates. Many artificial sweeteners have been created as sugar substitutes for diabetics’ dietary needs.

Today, doctors accept the fact that diabetics are going to be exposed to sugar and other carbohydrates no matter how carefully they try to avoid them. While it is true that there are artificial sweeteners out there that have zero calories and no carbohydrates, that does not mean that diabetics can safely use them.

Carbohydrates include both sugars and starches, so foods like pasta and potatoes need to be limited just as badly as sweet foods with sugars in them.

A diabetic’s diet should also work to incorporate an increased number of vegetables and fruits. You’ll still have that food’s natural sugars, but they won’t make your blood glucose level increase, as they are different kinds of sugars than you’re used to In addition, they contain more fiber, which helps the body to eliminate waste better and make the person feel full so that fewer calories are consumed.

It’s also not true that meals for diabetics need to be made seperately from everyone else’s food. The fact is that the best diet for diabetics is the same as the best diet for the rest of the family. This should be a balanced diet of plenty of fruits and vegetables, along with the right amount of proteins and starches, and only a few fats.
